Planktonic Diatoms as Indicators of Water Quality
38,89 € *

Phytoplankton are free floating microscopic plants that constitute the basic component of the aquatic food chain. Diatoms are members of phytoplankton. Diatoms occur in almost all aquatic environments and are abundant in most. They are sensitive to changes in water quality and many taxa have well developed optima and tolerance. Due to their short cell cycles they are able to rapidly colonize new habitats causing changes in their community representing rapid response to environmental change. Diatoms response time is a useful intermediate between immediate and infrequent physico-chemical sampling where rapid changes can result in ecological significant fluctuations. Diatoms are limited in their movement between habitats thus either do well in the environment where they are found or they do not hence many species are more likely to be found in habitats with specific physical and chemical parameters. Diatoms are being increasingly advocated for as biological indicators as they respond strongly to environmental changes and integrate responses to a range of pollutants in water bodies over different time scales and can be used to compare relative water quality changes from site to site.

Limnological status of freshwater bodies of Goa

The study of temporal and spatial distribution of zooplankton in relation to various physico-chemical factors forms an important aspect of the freshwater ecology aimed at understanding life in water. The populations of zooplankton are subjected to extreme fluctuations, the causes of which have not been adequately understood. Though a good deal of information is available on the distribution of plankton, no comprehensive study seems to have been carried out earlier, to understand correlation between zooplanktonic populations and the abiotic factors. An objective evaluation of the relationship of the population and the ambient conditions can however be made using the statistical tools. Apart from the above there are no comparative studies on physical, chemical and biological components of freshwater bodies into distinctly visible agro-climatically different environmental conditions. The present work not only deals with the studies of a few freshwater bodies in the states of Goa and provides a comparison and contrasting study with regard to altitude, geographical locations and similar other variations.

This book provides an insight into the current scenario of water quality of River Newaj, Madhya Pradesh, India. Authors have tried to provide a detailed information about water pollutants and their impact on physico-chemical characteristics of water . Every living thing on earth needs water to survive. Human bodies are made up of more than 60 percent water. We use clean water to drink, grow crops for food, operate factories, and for swimming, surfing, fishing and sailing. Water is vitally important to every aspect of our lives. Monitoring the quality of surface water will help protect our waterways from pollution. Farmers can use the information to help better manage their land and crops. Our local, state and national governments use monitoring information to help control pollution levels. We can use this information to understand exactly how we impact our water supply and to help us understand the important role we all play in water conservation. This book is a potential tool for the students and scholars to understand limnology of rivers and lotic water quality dynamics.

Water resources pollution by effluents from abattoirs is of public health concern because bodies of water are used for sources of drinking water or recreational activities and discharge of waste into it can lead to destruction of primary biota. This study presents the effect of abattoir waste on the quality of the Trans-Amadi Creek, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Physico-chemical parameters were assessed to evaluate the effect of the abattoir discharge in the Creek.

Limnology is the study of aquatic ecosystems. The quality of water is extremely variable in physical, chemical and biological characteristics. This book is describes about 02 water bodies of Bhalki and Bidar, India in special reference to inter relationship of physico-chemical and biological factors. Which include collection of data pertaining to meteorological conditions like temperature, rainfall and humidity, methodology, data preparation and interpretation with statistical tools of physico-chemical status of water, Primary production and phytoplankton composition such as pH, alkalinity, hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate, nitrite, phosphorous, silicon, organic content, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, primary productivity of water bodies consists of grass primary productivity, net primary productivity and community respiration and periodicity and abundance of phytoplankton. Book consist 166 identified algal species photographs of studied water body. It also reveals about polluting sources, ecology of the water body and management.
