The study of temporal and spatial distribution of zooplankton in relation to various physico-chemical factors forms an important aspect of the freshwater ecology aimed at understanding life in water. The populations of zooplankton are subjected to extreme fluctuations, the causes of which have not been adequately understood. Though a good deal of information is available on the distribution of plankton, no comprehensive study seems to have been carried out earlier, to understand correlation between zooplanktonic populations and the abiotic factors. An objective evaluation of the relationship of the population and the ambient conditions can however be made using the statistical tools. Apart from the above there are no comparative studies on physical, chemical and biological components of freshwater bodies into distinctly visible agro-climatically different environmental conditions. The present work not only deals with the studies of a few freshwater bodies in the states of Goa and provides a comparison and contrasting study with regard to altitude, geographical locations and similar other variations.
Limnology is the study of aquatic ecosystems. The quality of water is extremely variable in physical, chemical and biological characteristics.This book is describes about 02 water bodies of Bhalki and Bidar, India in special reference to inter relationship of physico-chemical and biological factors. Which include collection of data pertaining to meteorological conditions like temperature, rainfall and humidity, methodology, data preparation and interpretation with statistical tools of physico-chemical status of water, Primary production and phytoplankton composition such as pH, alkalinity, hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate, nitrite, phosphorous, silicon, organic content, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, primary productivity of water bodies consists of grass primary productivity, net primary productivity and community respiration and periodicity and abundance of phytoplankton. Book consist 166 identified algal species photographs of studied water body. It also reveals about polluting sources, ecology of the water body and management.
Limnological investigations of water bodies of Dharwad area were started in 1959. Most of these works were concentrated on the physico-chemical factors of the water and their correlations with plankton composition. Fresh water plankters are important component in aquatic ecosystems and participate as a link between the trophic levels. These are more valuable as indicators of trophic conditions and respond more rapidly to the environmental changes than the fishes. Therefore, they are of considerable potential value as water quality indicators. This book is useful for the young researchers as it guides to assess trophic status using zooplankton as indicator. It gives baseline data of some water-bodies of South Indian water-bodies in general and Dharwad area in particular.
An investigation was made on physico-chemical characteristics, primary productivity parameters, nutrient dynamics, plankton diversity and abundance of an urban and peri urban pond, located in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh, India. The study was conducted during April 2013 to March 2014. The samples were analysed at monthly intervals. Most of the limnological parameters reached their peak during the winter months and were within the optimum range for freshwater semi intensive fish culture practices. It was concluded that the present extensive fish culture practices should be upgraded to semi intensive methods in these water bodies based on recommendations.
