It´s a truism, for instance, that a few clothes are more shocking than none. But for women especially, bras, panties, bathing suits, and other stereotypical gear are visual reminders of a commercial, idealized feminine image that our real and diverse female bodies can´t possibly fit. Without those visual references, however, each individual woman´s body can be accepted on its own terms. We stop being comparatives. We begin to be unique. After spending a few days at a spa in the company of 90 or so women, Gloria Steinem wrote In Praise of Women´s Bodies, a short but powerful essay that´s part ode and part treatise and fully in awe of the female form, in all its unique variety. In Praise of Women´s Bodies was originally published in Ms., April 1982. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Marianne Fraulo. A distinguished dance critic offers an enchanting introduction to the art of ballet. As much as we may enjoy Swan Lake or The Nutcracker, for many of us ballet is a foreign language. It communicates through movement, not words, and its history lies almost entirely abroad - in Russia, Italy, and France. In Celestial Bodies, dance critic Laura Jacobs makes the foreign familiar, providing a lively, poetic, and uniquely accessible introduction to the world of classical dance. Combining history, interviews with dancers, technical definitions, descriptions of performances, and personal stories, Jacobs offers an intimate and passionate guide to watching ballet and understanding the central elements of choreography. Beautifully written, Celestial Bodies is essential listening for all lovers of this magnificent art form. Margot Hojell´s debut book, The Interwoven Bodies of the Cosmic Unconscious, consists of work written and edited by the visionary poet over the past 10 plus years. This collection of poems, or what she refers to as ´´poem pieces´´, touches on multiple senses. The sounds of the words form the music, creating an audio experience. Her word/letter formations in some if not all of her poems - some more obvious than others - stimulate the senses in a visual way. Transcending boundaries, she pushes some people´s preconceived notions of books being static, transporting you into her vision, feeling like you´ve been physically moved. The Interwoven Bodies of the Cosmic Unconscious flows and ties poetry, music, and sensory stimulation seamlessly together, leaving you with what all good books should leave you with - a new experience. 1. Modern Bodies: Dance and American Modernism fro...

In 1930, dancer and choreographer Martha Graham proclaimed the arrival of ´´dance as an art of and from America´´. Dancers such as Doris Humphrey, Ted Shawn, Katherine Dunham, and Helen Tamiris joined Graham in creating a new form of dance, and, like other modernists, they experimented with and argued over their aesthetic innovations, to which they assigned great meaning. Their innovations, however, went beyond aesthetics. While modern dancers devised new ways of moving bodies in accordance with many modernist principles, their artistry was indelibly shaped by their place in society. Modern dance was distinct from other artistic genres in terms of the people it attracted: white women (many of whom were Jewish), gay men, and African American men and women. Women held leading roles in the development of modern dance on stage and off; gay men recast the effeminacy often associated with dance into a hardened, heroic, American athleticism; and African Americans contributed elements of social, African, and Caribbean dance, even as their undervalued role defined the limits of modern dancers´ communal visions. Through their art, modern dancers challenged conventional roles and images of gender, sexuality, race, class, and regionalism with a view of American democracy that was confrontational and participatory, authorial and populist. The book is published by University of North Carolina Press. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Celeste Lawson. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/redw/000089/bk_redw_000089_sample.mp3. A Macat analysis of Ernst H. Kantorowicz´s The King´s Two Bodies: A Study in Medieval Political Theology Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1997 Examining 1,200 years of history from the foundation of Charlemagne´s Holy Roman Empire to the beheading of King Charles I in England is in itself a mammoth undertaking. But it is the issues explored by German American historian Ernst H. Kantorowicz in his 1957 study The King´s Two Bodies that have had a profound effect on the way academics think about the study of history. Early European monarchs were considered to have two bodies: one earthly and private, one almost divine, embodying the State. Examining the image of these two bodies, Kantorowicz goes on to identify the ways in which monarchies used religious imagery and ideas to enhance and extend the ruler´s power and to form states. Analyzing an impressive array of primary material - from literary and artistic texts to historical and legal works - Kantorowicz compares the ways leaders across the centuries make use of broadly similar symbols to achieve their political ends. Decades after its original publication, The King´s Two Bodies remains a major text in its field. You can find out more about how Kantorowicz´s ideas have been challenged and applied - and how his work has impacted on thinkers in other academic disciplines - by exploring further in the Macat Library. Macat´s analyses cover 14 different subjects in the humanities and social sciences. Macat. Learn better. Think smarter. Aim higher. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com.
